What is Scrap Metal?

Scrapping 101

Scrap Metal is 4 Main Types of Metal

  1. Steel – a magnet will stick to.  It will rust and turn orange/brown.
  2. Aluminum – Does not rust nor corrode.  It is used on boats and anything that would be subject to weather or make contact with the ground.  Unless painted, it will be a gray/silver color.
  3. Copper – is a burnt orange or orangish brown.  Found in wire, but not coax (coax is not scrap), home water pipes, electric motors, and air conditioners, along with many other places.  It does not rust, but oxidises.  That is to turn green or white.
  4. Brass – is found as “Yellow” or “White” Brass.  Yellow brass is common in statues, light fixtures, or anything decorative.  Yellow brass often looks brown.  White Brass is common in faucets and public toilets.  Most sink parts are white and yellow brass.  Brass, like copper, oxidises and turns green and white.

For something to be scrap, it must be more than 50% metal.  We take anything metal, even if it is less than 50% because we disassemble it to make it 50%.
